This album would prove to be more successful compared to his first mixtape, and it debuted at number six on the Billboard Hot 200. Flocka named the album Flockaveli in honor of Tupac Shakur's alter-ego, Makaveli. Soon enough, Waka Flocka would become a member of Gucci's "1017 Brick Squad." As a member of the squad, Waka Flocka would frequently feature on Gucci's tracks.Īfter spending years learning the ropes with Gucci Mane's oversight, Waka Flocka was ready to release his debut album in 2010. Waka Flocka and Gucci had known each other since Flocka was 19, and the two had a mutual connection through Flocka's mother. One person who saw that potential was Gucci Mane. Although Waka Flocka wasn't an instant hit like many other artists, he nonetheless showed that he had potential. This mixtape contained this hit "O Let's Do It," which became moderately successful. In 2008, Waka Flocka was ready to release his mixtape, Salute Me or Shoot Me Vol. Later, Gucci Mane added "Flocka Flame," completing his moniker. However, one of his cousins soon dubbed him "Waka" after the catchphrase used by a character from The Muppets. At this point in time, the rapper did yet not have his trademark stage name. He also worked with a local producer called Tay Beatz, and together they started piecing together a mixtape that would eventually launch Waka Flocka's career. The young rapper soon got to work and began to write his own raps. At the time Gucci Mane was represented by Waka Flocka's mother. The turning point came when Waka Flocka saw Gucci Mane performing on stage. He spent a lot of time on the streets of Atlanta, especially after his older brother passed away after a car accident.Īt age 14, Waka Flocka started to show a greater interest in music. The thought of pursuing a career in music wasn't even on his mind, despite the fact that his mother's connections would have made it easier to pursue this career path.ĭespite the fact that his family was relatively affluent, Waka Flocka became involved in crime and gang activities. The third and final day was full of surprises from a final performance to close the weekend by Meek Mill to a surprise appearance from hip hop icon, Young Thug, as he jumped on the stage during the one-on-one of his mentee, Gunna. The night ended with a talent show of sort with auditions on the main stage hosted by Druski. Day 2 had conversations about "The Power of the Black Dollar", conversations about individuality with Aminé, Alonzo Arnold, Lil Yachty, and BigBankKeisha, and talks about jewelry at the "Get Your Shine On". The day was also highlighted by not only the 85 South Comedy Show with the trio, DC Youngfly, Chico Bean, and Karlous Miller who had the crowd laughing in tears, but also highlighted by the performances from Atlanta's own, Lil Yachty and the City Girls on the main stage.įriday's schedule was jam-packed with panels from top to bottom with talks with people like Allen Iverson, Chance the Rapper, Joey Badass, Waka Flocka Flame, Rick Ross, and Grillz by Scotty. On Thursday, a Level Up Career Fair with companies such as Combs Enterprises, REVOLT, AT&T, Universal Music Group, and WarnerMedia. Attendees filled up the venues day-after-day to hear from a crop of flourishing influential voices speak on culture, business, and entertainment in Atlanta, Georgia at the 787 Windsor this past Thursday through Saturday. Many of the more prolific artists, entrepreneurs, and notable public figures of the hip hop culture showed up and showed out at this year's REVOLT x AT&T Summit.
